In the modern era that we live in, simplification and miniaturisation of our daily products are actively executed. Owing to the rise in the minimalism design trend today, the products around us are becoming smaller and smaller. However, some products are not properly miniaturised.
In this article, I would like to delve into the craft tools in our pencil case. As the appearances of these tools are directly linked to their usability, it is not an easy job to properly reshape them or reduce their sizes. Furthermore, some craft tools such as scissors, cutter knives and rulers are only used once or twice a day. This means that there is a severe inefficiency in bringing around these tools which are rarely used and only take up the limited space in our pencil case.
현대 시대의 제품들엔 소형화, 단순화가 적극적으로 이루어지고 있습니다. 우리 곁에 있는 제품들도 그에 상응하듯 점점 작아지는 듯한 모양새를 띄고 있습니다. 그러나 그런 와중에도 소형화가 제대로 이루어지지 않은 제품도 분명히 존재합니다.
많은 것들이 있겠지만 그 중 우리의 필통 속에 있는 공예 도구에 관하여 이야기해보고자 합니다. 그것들은 형태 자체가 곧 사용성으로 연관되기에 형태를 바꾸거나 크기를 줄이기가 쉽지 않습니다. 휴대가 편하지도 않은데 가위나 커터칼, 자 등의 공예 도구는 하루에 한두 번 정도 사용할까 말까입니다. 공간만 차지하고 몇 번 사용하지 않으니 들고 다니는 것만으로 효율이 많이 떨어진다 생각했습니다.

Although most craft tools are slim like other stationeries, scissors face the greatest problem. The holes in the handle of the scissors are effective when in use. However, these large holes significantly reduce the portability of the scissors which makes them a little burdensome to carry around.
그나마 다른 공예 도구들은 여타 필기구들과 비슷하게 얇고 긴 형태를 가지고 있어 큰 부피 차지 없이 휴대할 수 있습니다만 문제는 주로 가위에서 발생합니다. 가위의 손잡이 '구멍'은 사용할 땐 효율적으로 기능하지만, 휴대할 때의 그 큰 구멍은 쓸데없는 부피 차지가 되어 가위의 공간 차지를 배로 늘리게 됩니다. 그로 인해 가위는 휴대하기에 조금 부담스러운 도구로 전락해버리고 말았습니다.

Keeping the aforementioned problems of scissors in mind, I attempted to redefine and come up with a fresh perspective towards the craft tools based on the scissors - they must be portable and easy to carry. From there, I embarked on my design journey.
그러한 문제점에서 착안하여 새로운 관점 하에 가위 기반으로 공예 도구들을 재정의 하려 시도했습니다. "공예 도구들은 휴대성이 편해야 한다."는 관점으로 공예 도구를 바라보며 디자인에 착수했습니다.

Maximized spatial efficiency

Spatial efficiency is maximised through enabling the scissor blades to be kept in the hole of the handle. However, the partial exposure of the blades may cause the scissors to look untidy due to the different structural appearance of the blades as compared to that of the handle. To minimise the untidiness, I have attached covers on the front and rear spaces that will function as a cutter knife and a ruler respectively.
양쪽으로 교차되어 결합된 가위 손잡이 구멍 사이에 가위 날을 끼워 보관할 수 있게 해 공간 효율성을 극대화 하였고, 앞 뒤 공간에 각자 커터칼과 자로 기능되는 커버를 부착해 자칫 다른 기하 도형 구조를 띄고 있는 날이 노출되어 정리되어 보이지 않을 수 있는 형태를 정리했습니다.

Usability preserving portability

Upon separation of the blades from the hole, they can be attached to the handle of the scissors. Meanwhile, the remaining covers will continue to function as a cutter knife and a ruler. In contrast to existing portable scissors that sacrificed usability for portability, this pair of scissors has managed to maintain its appearance when in use while its portability and usability are significantly enhanced.
분리 후, 보관되었던 가위 날 파츠는 손잡이를 부착하여, 나머지 두 커버는 그 자체로 커터칼과 자로 사용됩니다. 휴대성을 위해 사용성을 포기한 기성 휴대용 가위 제품과 다르게, 사용할 때의 형태를 가위 본연을 모습으로 유지하여 휴대성과 사용성을 동시에 확보했습니다.
